The 5th Annual Festival of Trees kicks off tonight (Thursday) from 5:30 - 8:30 pm at First Federated Church of Peoria's Life Together Center (formerly the Great Central Insurance Building located at 3625 N. Sheridan Rd. in Peoria) and continues Friday & Saturday from 10 am - 8 pm and on Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm.  The Festival of Trees is a community-wide event with 60 beautifully decorated trees and wreaths on display and for bidding on to take home. Other highlights from the weekend will include a gift shop, an out-and-about gift certificate tree, a snack shop, a Saturday Night Pajama Party, on-going family friendly entertainment and much more. WCBU-FM will host a live Town Hall Discussion on Peoria's "Don't Shoot" Program tonight (Thursday) beginning at 6:30 pm in the Peoria City Hall Chambers. The meeting will provide an update on how the program, created to reduce violent gun crimes in the community, has been working since its launch 15 months ago. Panelists include Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard, Peoria County State's Attorney Jerry Brady and U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis. Each night, containers will be placed at each entrance to Carver Arena and fans are encouraged to donate any amount possible to the local American Red Cross for Central Illinois Tornado Relief. In exchange for a donation, each fan will receive a FREE upper bowl ticket (a $12 value) to the Dec. 20 game against Bloomington, which has been designated as "Central Illinois Strong" night. Also, the Peoria Rivermen will team up with the Alzheimer's Association Central Illinois Chapter to help raise funds and awareness to fight Alzheimer's disease: to recognize National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, $5 of every $17-lower bowl ticket purchased for Friday's game against Pensacola will be donated to the organization. Fans will also receive a special edition t-shirt.

The Shoppes at Grand Prairie will host a Grand Day of Giving on Saturday from 10 am - 9 pm to support area tornado victims. Donations being accepted include nonperishable food items, new or gently used coats to benefit Coats for Kids as well as monetary contributions to support the Red Cross. The 29th Annual Festival of Lights Parade will take place on Saturday in East Peoria beginning at 5:45 pm. The parade features floats shaped entirely from lights, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the chopper motorcycle float illuminated with LED lights, a 70-foot long float of the famous Clydesdale horse team pulling a delivery wagon, Frosty the Snowman, the starship Enterprise illuminated with 48,000 LED light bulbs and the 95-foot-long smoke-spewing China dragon. The 43rd Annual Peoria Turkey Trot will take place on Sunday beginning at 1 pm at Detweiller Park (located at 8327 N. Galena Rd. in Peoria). Rain, shine or snow, Peoria's oldest running race is a 4-mile run through with the top two finishers in each division receiving a trophy and a turkey (compliments of Kroger). All entrants receive a Turkey Trot t-shirt. A ½ mile youth fun-run will take place immediately before the start of the run. Stroemple Collection will present "Natural History Through the Eyes of a Private Collector" at the Peoria Riverfront Museum on Sunday beginning at 2 pm where she will share images and her expertise on one of the most significant private collections of artwork today. The theme of natural history unites this collection, which contains Native American artifacts, studio glass, Japanese Meiji objects and more.
