The 41st Annual World Championship Old-time Piano Playing Contest and Festival will take place this weekend around the Peoria area with ragtime and honky-tonk piano players from around the world competing for more than $4,000 in cash prizes. Starting with dinner at Sky Harbor Steakhouse tonight (Thursday) and continuing with a Spirit of Peoria cruise on Friday, the contests and competitions will take place at the Embassy Suites East Peoria throughout the weekend. The 2015 Summer Camp Music Festival will be held at Three Sisters Park (located at 17201 N State Route 29 in Chillicothe) beginning Thursday with a pre-party and running through Sunday evening. With more than 15,000 attendees, the event features more than 100 bands on 7 stages over 3 days. Smoke on the Mountain continues tonight (Thursday) at the Barn 2 Dinner Theatre in Goodfield and runs through June 7. The Murph Challenge will take place on Saturday locally at CrossFit 309 (located at 704 E. War Memorial Drive in Peoria Heights) with heats at 8 am & 9 am. Join people across the US in honoring fallen service members this Memorial Day by participating in the event named after Lieutenant Michael Murphy, a Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan in 2005. The work-out consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats and another 1-mile run. The 1st Annual Memorial Day Springdale Salute 5K Run/1 Mile Walk will be held on Monday at lower Glen Oak Park beginning at 7:30 am taking runners through Springdale Cemetery. The entry fee is $30 prior to race weekend and $35 on race weekend with a $5 discount for Veterans. Awards will be given at "Picnic Party" after run. A Memorial Day Remembrance Service will be held on Monday in Marshall Plaza (under the Gateway Building located at the foot of Main Street in Peoria) beginning at 10:30 am paying tribute to all of the men and women who have fought for America's freedom. The Peoria County Veterans' War Memorial Committee will hold a Memorial Day Observance at the World Wars I & II Veterans Memorial at the Peoria County Courthouse Plaza on Monday beginning at 1pm. People who have purchased a brick throughout the year to honor a Peoria County veteran are invited to attend and the public is welcome.
The Annual South-West Kiwanis Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday at the Vietnam War Memorial located near the Prospect Road entrance to Glen Oak Park beginning at 1 pm. Richwoods High School Marine ROTC will parade and retire colors, there will be a 21 gun salute and keynote speaker will be Vietnam War Veteran David Reed Clark.
