The 2016 Heart of Illinois Fair opens with a preview tonight (Thursday) at Expo Gardens (located at 1601 West Northmoor Road in Peoria) and runs through Saturday, July 16 with gates open from 10 am - 10 pm each day. Attractions include a carnival, live entertainment, a bags tournament, a kiddie tractor pull, a petting zoo, truck and tractor pulls plus the Axe Women Loggers of Maine. Community Children's Theatre will present Singin' in the Rain at Peoria Players Theatre tonight (Thursday) at 7 pm, on Friday & Saturday at 1:30 and 7 pm and Sunday at 1:30 pm. The stage version of the classic film featuring over 50 students aged 8 - 18 performing the iconic songs with several tap dance numbers and actual rain, tickets are $15 adults and $9 students and senior citizens and are available for at the Noble Center (located 1125 W Lake Ave. in Peoria), online www.artspartners.net and at the door. "Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human?" from the Smithsonian Institution is on exhibit at the Peoria Public Library daily (except Sunday) from 9 am - 6 pm in the Gallery at the Main Library (located at the corner of Main and Monroe in downtown Peoria). Admission is free.

The Peoria Historical Society's "Naughty to Nice Tour" will run every Friday in July beginning at 11 am tracing triumphs through time from the 1920's to the present.  It entails stories of the city's gangster era, including driving by the site of Peoria's most notorious crime scene: the Bernie Shelton murder. Their "River City Tour" winds along Grandview Drive takes place every Saturday in July beginning at 11 am.  And their "Roll Out the Barrel Tour" takes you through the earliest sections of downtown Peoria and into the Warehouse District where you'll discover historical facts about distilling in Peoria every Saturday in July beginning at 1:30 pm.  All tours start & end at the Peoria Riverfront Museum in downtown Peoria. Ham Cram, a 2 session course, will take place in the Peoria Riverfront Museum Boardroom from 6 - 8:30 pm on Friday and 9 am - 4 pm on Saturday. Learn how to communicate via ham radios in this high-intensity study session that will prepare anyone to obtain a technician level amateur radio license. No prior radio experience is needed. Topics include how radio waves travel antennas and feed-line, amateur radio repeats, basic electricity concepts, how to set up a radio station, station operation and license requirements, and using a ham radio for emergency communications.
